I just downloaded the latest nvidia driver. One thing I discovered is that they provide *excellent* documentation. There is a full manual (I think it is called 'readme' though) with lots of excellent stuff including which driver options to tweak to change the permissions of the device files, which the driver recreates each time it starts, IIRC. There's also a lot of information in that manual and in the knowledgebase and release notes on problems with specific hardware/software configurations and how to get around them.
