A possible 'kludge' -- you get specific error messages in the log when autofs can't find a home dir to mount. Assuming this doesn't happen *that* often, could something monitor autofs's log for those messages, and restart it if they occurred? It'd be a last-resort kludge, but might deal with the problem until the underlying problem was found... ??? Just an idea.... Might have to tune the sensitivity to only restart after getting some minimum number of messages-- dunno, but it would be a kludge..
