Where are the people who care about normal end-users who use the computer as a tool only. +1. That is the one big question we need to worry about. [pruned]
Lock down the server, but assume that a desktop is used by one person (at most a family, with natural social control) who needs to do what he wants. Like installing new software (hasn't been mentioned yet). Then, if you want to, add a "corporate desktop" which ist something in between. [pruned]
And I think that this is the crux of the problems - and a bane on the many discussions which occur here (and elsewhere). People are forgetting that openSUSE is the 'experimental' software which the "lab bunnies" are given for free to test, to report on the bugs et al, and have their patience and nerves stretched to the limit and all done with the ultimate aim of producing SUSE. The emphasis is not on the common, garden variety user at home but trying to make the software acceptable by corporations. But there doesn't seem to be the intermediary step of aiming at the ordinary user first and THEN altering things to suit the corporate world and environment. Unfortunately, there are many more people, the common home user, than there are corporations which is something that MS worked out many years ago - and prospered. And so has Apple for that matter. I don't see any articles about how many corporations are using Apples/MACs but we all hear how many Apple products are being bought by the punters in the streets.
