SuSE 9.1 Pro - kernel = 2.6.5-7.111
I am trying to rebuild my kernel by doing the following :
a. cd /usr/src/linux b. make mrproper c. make cloneconfig d. edit '.config' and change CONFIG_CFGNAME to "optimal" e. make xconfig f. make g. make install h. make modules_install
At this point I find the the directory /lib/modules/2.6.5-7.11-optimal/kernel has no files. I therefore cannot execute the next command 'mkinitrd'.
The problem is step (d) above. I change this so that the original default kernel is left intact. If I do not do step (d) then the make process completes successfully except that the initrd file generated is faulty.
are there any workarounds ?

I believe you are using the old 2.4.x commands. The commands for the 2.6.x kernel are different... # make && make modules_install ...At least I know that works on my Gento system (I have never built a 2.6.x kernel on SuSE, but the commands are universal). HTH... -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio
