That's a special case because the vast majority won't do that. But I did do that in the past. Nothing to it besides calling mkinitrd to rebuild the initrd after having compiled the kernel. Never had a problem with that.

Factory is just that. It's the developement version of what will become the next release and as such will be broken now and then. People who can't live with that should use the released version.
Yes, but even factory shouldn't be breaking egregiously due to a , brittle, problem-magnifying and poorly-thought out act of moving critical executables from /bin to /usr/bin.
