I am not currently using fetchmail and sendmail, as I am having problems getting sendmail to use port 25000. When I used them, I used procmail; and it indeed used the mbox format. I had used pine and mutt to read the messages.
Ah okay, have you tried Exim or POstfix as they will bind to whatever port you tell them to.
