I'm actually farther from you than you think, near Boston Massachusetts
to be precise. I have no idea how that sender address got into your
message from me. Owen is the host name of my laptop, but it's
certainly never been in the mcc.ac.uk domain. I move it between home
and work and change the network settings accordingly, but owen is
always the host name. I'm sending this reply to the suse-e list in
case someone on the list can explain this behavior.
Hi Bernie (copied to the SuSE list in case anyone else tries to crack
the problem).
I've had a look at the headers in the copy you sent directly to me.
Relevant headers are:

It would seem that it creeps in at the one which starts
"Received: from owen (h00400536fc14.ne.mediaone.net [24.128.224.115])"
I suspect that, seeing the machine-name "owen" with no domain name,
the mail-handling software at mcc.ac.uk (on serenity) assumes that
"owen" is the name of a machine on the mcc.ac.uk domain, and inserts
that domain to complete the FQDN, and then fills in the "Sender"
address accordingly.
However, I can't see anything in there which identifies the sending
user as "bernie@owen", so maybe there is an earlier "Sender" address
which says "Sender: bernie@owen" and it is this which gets re-written.
I can't guess at where the set-up issue lies which causes this to
happen -- whether it is on your laptop, or at mediaone.net
I hope this helps!
Ted.
