I use simple Linux utilities to set up my album.

The results are sort of OK. I've also got a quick-and-dirty shell program to do most of the work once the parameter files (holding resolutions, etc) have been set. It just gets a little tedious juggling things around from page to page and positioning each picture on a page in a relative position. (I use tables for positional control) Useful JPEG utilities for automation are jpegtran {rd,rw}jpgcom [cd]jpeg pnmscale PBM utilities to turn photos from other sources into JPEG I'm basically looking for a neat way to edit the parameter files using a GUI. Not entirely for my own benefit!
Finishing implementing descriptions of the pictures is the next piece of the project...
