I was able to configure thunderbird on my home pc to open attachments with okular, but I can't remember how I did it. Now I am stuck, and searching the forums doesn't yield any help. The mimeedit extension for thunderbird seemed to work for some people before, but that extension has been removed from thunderbird options.
George Edit/Preferences/Attachments/PDF --- select what you want done.

This is also kind of weird. I found this thread on the internet with several replies by Basil, but for some reason I only received the very first reply. There were also several replies to this thread from jdd, but I have received none of those in my gmail account.
