I'll start with a silly question. Have you tried plugging the hard disk in? If 
yes, are there any warning messages in /var/log/messages

When you plug in the hard disk is the Vendor & Product ID shown using usbview?
Check on 
http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/devices.php
under mass storage to see if your device is supported.

Sorry I can't help you any further without full details of what problems you 
are having.

BTW All USB mass storage devices will show up as SCSI devices.e.g.  /dev/sda
