I need some help with this...for the last several months I have dealt with my ppp connection slowing *way* down while trying to load pages and/or download (from 52000 to about 300). I've played with the /ppp/options file (changing both the hardware flow control and the MRU) and even swapped out modems. I'm stumped. In the meantime, I *have* learned the following about the problem: 1. It seems that when the problem occurs with Netscape, whatever Netscape is loading becomes jumbled with other things that it might be doing, like loading advertisments and such (like it is overloaded). 2. The problem also occurs with newsreaders and FTP programs..even dropping carrier in some instances. 3. This part is odd: I use Balsa as my e-mailer. If I am having the problem with any of the above, starting Balsa seems to 'kick start' the connection, making it jump from <1000 to over 4000. This, however, is temporary as shortly after this the connection slows back down to <1000--sometimes within 30 seconds (often about 2 minutes, though). When it slows down, I close Balsa, wait 30 seconds, and restart it. Once again, the connection is kickstarted. What is the problem? I have not been able to download major programs (like the latest Netscape) as the connection slows way down and/or drops carrier. Not to mention the problem of doing online transactions...
