well, it's the same problem. Don't use standard system log for debug an application. you could as well flood /var/log/messages with this

Well, syslog() has had the LOG_DEBUG level for decades. It may not be exactly "debug" messages, but simply an extensive audit trail.
Yes. It allows, for instance, tracking where an email went wrong, tracing how it went through the different daemons. The information is different from the audit the authorities want for email: from, to, subject, date. At least, maybe all the headers. Dunno. And debug messages do not flood /var/log/messages if you want. They would go to a different file, with earlier rotation.
