It comes as a rude shock to most Canadians, to find that they are being fraudulently charged ~$25-30 for phony 'brokerage' charges by Purolator on each shipment from the USA to Canada. (Form letter)
To save the cross-border aggravation (though maybe not on money), why not buy from a Canadian distributor? http://www.camelot.ca (search on SuSE) will send it to you within a couple of days, as soon as they have it. They are definitely making a profit, but they don't charge additional for shipping. Also, if you live outside Quebec, you don't pay provincial sales tax... just federal GST.
We signed a Free-Trade Agreement for God's sakes, yet these people rip us off for their own greedy purposes. The same software package shipped by US Mail, comes just about as fast, goes through same Customs inspections etc and costs ~$3-4 to your door. Yet SUSE (USA) will only ship via Purolator, and not via US Mail. I refuse to deal with Purolator's tactics and OVERCHARGES, so what to do? Has anyone found a mail source for SUSE 9 Pro Upgrade that avoids Purolator? Thanks
I'm guessing, but SuSE (USA) probably ships via Purolator because Purolator will track the package. If they ship via USPS, there's no tracking. More correctly, USPS will track the package as far as the last US handling point before the border, but there is no hand-off to Canada Post.... er... that is, they'll hand off the package, but not the tracking data. Canada post will track parcels inside Canada, but only when they have information on the origin. In the case of packages crossing the border, there's a tracking black hole. Some day, the bureaucrats will pull their heads out long enough to have the two systems cooperate. /kevin (in Ottawa, waiting for my SuSE 9.0 Pro box to arrive from Montreal)
