# I know I have cdrecord and mkisofs installed.
#
# I have confirmed the ide-scsi module is present.
Is it loaded? lsmod as root?
#
# However, several of the config files I was instructed to edit there do
# not exist on SUSE8, at least in the location or form the help page
# above-referenced would imply
#
# The problem begins when I try to get to /etc/rc.d/rc.local. No such
# file exists. /etc/rc.d is a shortcut to a different directory.
On SuSe this file is /etc/init.d/boot.local. Although the article says "/sbin/insmod/ide-scsi", "/sbin/modprobe/ide-scsi" is better, in my opinion.
#
# Also, there is no /etc/conf.modules
On SuSE this file is modules.conf. I open it as root with kwrite to be able to search if any of the strings to be added are already present.
I could not get lilo to boot (on my 40GB drive) because of some quirk that I never quite understood, so I changed to GRUB. Don't do that unless you have several free hours and a hacker's mindset.
#
# I realize I'm lower on the learning curve than many. So I'll go back to
# the SUSE manual and docs and see what I can find.
#
# If you have any constructive suggestions, I'd sure appreciate it.
When I rebooted everything loaded and cdrecord -scanbus showed by ATAPI CD-RW/DVD as a scsi drive on /dev/sr0. I can also access it as /cdrecorder, /dev/cdrecorder and /dev/scd0.
Good Luck.
