I'd do but I don't know how to do it. It is a webmail application.
The faster way to start application from the start menu is click the kickoff icon, move the pointer in one direction only, let's say upward, onto an icon and click on that icon. Every other method, when you have to move the mouse vertically and horizontally several time and click more than once is more tedious and slower. Therefore having favorite applications in the main menu is the most effective.
The first, left most page is "Favorites", is the first presented and is configuragle to hold your choices and by your definition is "most effective".
Yes it is. Until you don't have to scroll in the list it is the most effective. But this applies to Applications Lanucher Style mode and I discussed Classic Menu Style mode.
But it is not "above" the other menu items so is more effective than your definition.
I guess the exact location is not important until the whole group can be easily distinguished from other menu items. Can be a top group or a bottom group. Bottom group is closer, less mouse movement, top group more mouse movement but might be easier to target.
KDE3 offered this as most frequently used application above the menu items. KDE4 does not have this options. I have filed feature request at kdebugs.org 3 monts ago, guess what? It even hasn't been looked at a KDE4 developer. See:
And rightfully so, the "feature" is there and is the "default" appearance as installed. Someone "should" reject it as an already provided feature.
Firts, I mention Classic Menu Style mode, not the default. Second, even the default mode does not have the this option. Favorites is a static list of applications while most frequently used application is a dynamic list based on the user's activity. You haven't read what I wrote there. Third, if - as you suggest - something what is not default shouldn't be supported then it would be enough one default look and behavior for everything, the default one - one color style, one icon style, one layout for how the icons ordered etc. No other options for anything since it is not default.
