Just received from somebody some important files in tif format. [snip] Does SuSE 9.0 or linux in general some special program to read such files or is tif propriety stuff.
TIFF is a bog standard format so you shouldn't have any problems. What program did you use? Certainly, the GIMP will handle TIFFs (there's no difference between TIF and TIFF - the former is just because Windows only handles 3-letter extensions; it just stands for "tagged image file format"). What app did the other person use to generate them? You could ask for PNG files, which is another lossless format.
