Hi there,
I have to setup a network with about 150 clients (Win9x mostly), using mail/agenda, printing, Internet, filesharing and so on. I ABSOLUTELY refuse to use WinNT as a file/print/mail/proxy/whatever- server so that leaves me NetWare and Linux for as far as my knowledge goes.
Does anybody know any good books about using Linux in an intranetworking environment? Or can anyone give me some hints?
These are the things I must do:
- Client must be able to 'login' and get a login-script to perform actions like starting programs local/updating the virusscanner et all - Broadcast-messages must show at the client (as NetWare uses 'send' or 'broadcast' and Windoze uses 'Winpopup') - Clients must be able to print on multiple printers ranging from Matrix- to laserprinters - Clients must be able to save data on the server and share it with other users - Clients must be able to surf the Net - Clients must be able to use a system-wide mail/agenda application (like Novell has GroupWise and M$ has Exch....Exch....Ex... (Well, y'all know what I mean))
This should be a nice project; I hope you all find the time to supply me with hints and other stuff.
Thanks,
Rogier Maas
Buy the Samba book: Samba can do most of the stuff you want it to do. Get a big fat server as a file server (I know Siemens has some nice servers preconfigured with...SuSE?). Then use some older machines in your company for a proxy/firewall and printservers. Don't know about virusscanners, but that should'nt be too much of a problem i guess. As for groupware: Lotus has Domino 5 for Linux, or you could use a web-based/intranet solution for this. Let us know how you go!
