But when I start KMail and try to use it to send email, it immediately pops up a dialog box asking for my SMTP password. I type it in, and click the option "store password". Kmail responds that KWallet is not available, and would I like to store it in plain text file? Then KWallet pops up a notification saying "There have been repeated failed attempts to gain access to a wallet. An application may be misbehaving."
Yes, try removing and setting again the username and password for the account in KMail in Settings. This happens fairly often here if I enter the password for kwallet too late after starting kontact.

Thanks! After some experimentation the solution that finally worked for me was to store both the SMTP and the IMAP password. If I do that, KWallet seems to be happy - I guess this takes care of the "enter password for kwalled too late after starting kontact" problem.
