I am wondering how to upgrade Linux. I am using Suse Linux 7.0 Professional and would like to upgrade to a newer version (newer is better correct?). Can this be done without allot of headaches. Is it recommended to upgrade by sequential version numbers? I have a dual processor Proliant 850R that I am using as a print server for our Macintosh and PC clients and do not want to disrupt printing services for an extended period. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.
Later is better as long as you stick to stable releases of software. Anything from SuSE is considered stable unless you go to wierd places on the ftp site. Moving from 7.0 to 8.0 would be a big jump, which, in theory the packages can handle, but in practise would probably introduce hard-to-find errors. Upgrading is generally OK across point releases, but when going across major releases I'd recommend a clean install. Which will, of course, distrupt your services. Think about whether you actually need to upgrade, and if you decide you do, find a spare machine to try things out on. -- 3:01pm up 8 days, 5:40, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.00
