Easiest way I've found for multimedia buttons is just to use KeyTouch. It picks up on all the keyboards I have and all the extra buttons work.. volume, email, home, fast forward, rewind, pause, play eject etc etc. MUCH easier than using that keybind method. Packman provides two KeyTouch packages (one is the editor).
I was unaware of this software until I read this thread, but I just checked the 10.3 repository and it's there. I installed it.

I have 2 set of logitech keyboards/mice and all the multimedia keys (except one which I can't recall) worked as soon as I plugged the keyboard in. In KDE, you can set the keyboard to Logitech xyz.. and straighten the multimedia keys out almost entirely. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
