Fully agreed. Same here with a 9200 SE, which does not work with the latest ATI drivers and the old drivers do not work with the current xorg 7.2. But: There is definitely no need! 3D with the native Radeon driver works ok (within the limits of such an "old iron") If you do need to, then by all means
get another ATI card, because most, except for the very latest cards, are supported natively in Xorg. This makes them both convenient and easy to set up using Sax2 in runlevel 3.
You will need to find either 8.28 or 8.29 version of the ATI driver, if you want to use that.
