The real critical entry, that tells the kernel to treat the cdrw as such is the hdc=ide-scsi in the append line. That looks good in your posting, but, there is a chance to set this for every different configuration you load from lilo. Everything you tried looks sane to me. So my final idea is that you placed that entry to a wrong loadable kernel. Or, try to ad that entry manually at bootup, to make sure. (at the boot prompt select your kernel and add hdc=ide-scsi)
Welllll......Juergen, It seems you have the right to question my intelligence. You are ABSOLUTELY correct about the append line. I have two kernels and the append line addressed the wrong one. Now it works. I feel pretty stupid right about now. Anyway, thank you in particular, and all of the rest of the nice folks on this list for trying to help me. Thanks again, and my regards to all.
