I'm sure I can find a lot of mails in that style sent by you and somehow I always have the feeling you want to criticize something. If not, excuse me but I think it's how your mails are understood often enough also by other people.
Don't worry, you are not alone with that perception. And he is not alone either – sadly. It's just an attitude some people get used to which results in them not noticing anymore what undertone their comments have. And they get defensive about it quite quickly as you noticed as well – simply because they are not aware of their writing style and hence feel misunderstood and offended as soon as pointed at it.
