Interesting, I can see how it might complain about runlevel 1, but I tried it and there was no xserver running (at least that I could see). The only other thing I can think of is to disable the xserver in the services and reboot the system. Try going into yast, system, and disable the xdm. You should then be able to reboot and install the nvidia. If the install goes well you can then enable the xdm and all should be good. Mike Steve Reilly wrote:
Hi,
tried as you asked....... I am getting the error message "you appear to be running in run level 1 this may cause problems as devfs is not running" quit install now?
i chose no, and then got another error message " you appear to have an x server running, please exit x before installing"
how in the world can x be running in run level 1????
i tried switching 1-7 and the blue screen saying x is disabled is still there on 7, and i still cannot kill that screen.
hmmmmmmmm...
im stumped.

init s
install the nvida drivers
init 5
Basically this shuts the system down to single user mode which does not have the graphical interface running. You can then install the nvidia drivers because the xserver is not running. The init 5 will put the system back into full multiuser mode and the xserver will be running.
NOTE: this will log you out.
