Sure. I don't run artsd or anything like that on my system. I just run plain KDE 2.1.1 on the SuSE 7.1 distro. My sound card is an Ensoniq PCI card. I noticed after installing VMWare that its virtual sound card that "looks like" a SoundBlaster 16 wants to output to the /dev/dsp device. That was OK, as I wasn't getting any error messages when I started vmware about it. However, I wasn't getting any sound output, either. This morning I decided to listen to some tunes while I was running some test applications on a JMS provider that I am evaluating using XMMS. Although it appeared to be playing a tune, no sound was coming out. I was suspicious because the only thing that had changed was the installation of vmware last night. So I opened the Mixer panel and checked that all the settings were correct - they were. However, I went through and "touched" them all anyway, running them all the way down then all the way back up for each control. That brought back XMMS sound output. I set the Mixer controls where I wanted them and saved. I left XMMS up and running, and started vmware. This time I got an error message telling me that the dev/dsp device was in use and would be disconnected from the virtual session. I then stopped vmware and exited. I also exited XMMS completely, and then started vmware again - no error message. I let Win98 "boot" (I still find this an amazing thing), and played a tune. Viola! There was sound output. I reset some of the Mixer controls in KMixer to my liking and now everyone is happy. "Touching" the mixer controls seemed to bring something alive that wasn't after the vmware installation. Sorry for the long story, but that's all I did. hth, -ronc On Friday 08 June 2001 13:03, you wrote:

I got the sound working by bringing up the KMixer console and making a few adjustments. So that's even better!
Can you please tell us how you did it?
