the 2.4 kenrel supports ip aliasing by default and as far as i know, there is nothing in the kernel config you have to change to enable this like three was in 2.2 series kernel. you should just be able to do ifconfig eth0:0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx up and the virtual interface should come up.
