Have you had a chance to look with *gpart* it is good for recovering partion info and fixing bad entries. Try to find a boot disk with gpart it may help
You know what? This seems so beyond that I'm prepared mentally to wipe the whole drive and start over. What's the best way to go about this? I tell ya, this is really fun and interesting, seeing as how this is a machine I really couldn't care less about and it's teaching me heaps! Nick
