gpm doesn't even read XF86Config. It is (or was) configured via Yast, but you may do it directly in "/etc/sysconfig/mouse"
But, sometimes gpm and X conflicts. Sometimes you have to disable gpm, start it before, or after, or before on repeat mode.
My experience was that I could have the wheel mouse, or I could have gpm, but not both :-)) I like the wheel mouse, so have (so far) put up with the frustration of not having gpm. I really want BOTH.
