I agree that "full source available" may never going to happen and, for the time being, linux distributionshave to use proprietary drivers but (it's obviously a personal preference) I would prefer to see it as an "temporary" solution but not a long-term one. Regarding the patent/intellectual property stuff, I think (but Im not skilled enough to be sure of that) that you can write drivers without breaking patents.
