In a short while, Python 2 will officially no longer be supported. As one would expect, distributions will no longer be making software packages based on Python 2.
I suspect Python 2 will continue to be packaged to support the huge amount of apps that make use of it, even if it is no longer being supported (like with Gtk+2, php5.6, etc...) Arch still has python2 and will continue to package it, so I don't see it just disappearing. It's the way it should be. -- David C.
