It's a standard way of modeling systems. It is directd toward OO design. Rational Rose is the leader in UML tools. Rose will allow you to start with use cases and end up with stub code. So it is something of a CASE TOOL. It's kind of hard to create something at the same time you are talking about it, and I have found that modeling at the level of detail required by UML is often over kill. On very large projects this may be necessary.
