I have heard of a set of files for KDE called Edutainment. There is a package in their that is called Stars, an astronomy program I want to install for my wife. Running SuSE 8.2 and checked in their archives, Did not find it. Also tried an apt-getinstall. No luck Was able to Google and found a CVS tar file for Stars. Would rather have the rpm and the whole package.
Do you have to have a KDE package? If not, have a look at XEphem, which is on the disks. It's Motif based (well someone has to support that toolkit!). Far and away the best star charting program I have seen on any platform. The only drawback is that it might be just a bit too complicated - I suppose that depends on your wife's level.
