I will not deny that vi is powerful... but it is rather cryptic for someone who has never even heard of it and has got to use it on a pinch to repair X. First time I used it I had to open another terminal to kill it: I had no idea how to exit. The impression was so bad that lasts to this day (and I do use it now and then). The important thing: must be easy on a first time user. Neither vi nor emacs fulfill that role.
