Xcdroast has always been in /usr/X11R6/bin/xcdroast and cdrecord has always been in /usr/bin/cdrecord on every SuSE rev I've ever used. It always worked???

IIRC, this was a packaging 'glitch'. You must have installed it from the CD. Get the update via YOU, which will fix that. HTH
¡True! I forgot that. From the patch info (/var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/8.2/patches/xcdroast-23925): Longdescription.english: Bugfix: This update adds copies of cdrecord, cdda2wav, readcd and mkisofs to xcdroasts bin directory to make non-root-mode work. This also fixes xcdroasts refusal to start. --- Charles -- "Absolutely nothing should be concluded from these figures except that no conclusion can be drawn from them." (By Joseph L.
