I'm using sef-compiled enlightenment (e16) for a long time.
And it's working fine for me.

Yes, it's very simple.
1. place .xinitrc in my home directory with mosification of
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
2. for kdm, copy e16.desktop to /usr/share/xsessions
That's all.
