After all, he was quite critical of the direction he felt that the US was moving in (both politically and socially). If he had written his critique today, he would be considered to be anti-American because: 1) He was French and you can NEVER trust the French ;-) 2) He spoke and wrote in more than one language (you never know what these foreigners are saying behind your back) ;-) 3) Criticism is fundamentally anti-American.
