Hi, I just recently installed Suse Linux 6.4 on my Windows Machine and whenever I run Minicom or wvdial under Linux, it doesn't seem to detect my modem. I am somewhat certain that I have a winmodem but shouldn't linux still be able to detect it? If you have a winmodem your chances are slim that you will ever get it to work. There are some winmodems with Lucent chips that have drivers available for Linux, but I found it better to just shell out the extra cash and buy an external modem that specifically said "controller based". It works like a dream and I never am guessing the settings. I plug it into com port one and tell Linux it is in com port one and it finds it.I advise if you are new to Linux to stay away from Plug and play modems as well. I bought one that specifically said works with linux and had a nightmare trying to set it up.
