"Yesterday my SuSE-9.2 arrived here. Foreseen of it that man's now again SUSE writes, it is noticeable that the installation DVD is a dual Layer DVD. Beautiful muck: The blanks are quite expensive (10 EUR) and only of certain DVD burners recordably, so that a backup copy can be only badly provided.
I provide gladly a backup copy and install with that, so that I have the original still surely seizablly. The backup copy remains then also mostly in my Notebook in it, so that I can after-install auxiliary software at any time.
Beginning: Of the original DVD do not need I well half definitely"
??? It's almost as bad as the original German. ;-)
:-) Ok, I'll give it a try: "Yesterday, my copy of SuSE 9.2 arrived. Apart from the fact that it's now spelled "SUSE" again, it's noticeable that the installation DVD is a dual Layer DVD. What a bummer! (note: leo.org proposed this translation...) The blank discs are quite expensive (10 EUR (>= 13$ for the first time now!)) and only certain writers can work with them. Makes creating a backup difficult. I like creating a backup to install from so I still have the original as a fallback. Afterwards, this backup remains in my notebook for installing additional software. Ansatz: I definitely *don't* need about half of the original DVD, i.e.: - KDE in all other languages than DE and EN, - lots of office stuff in languages other than DE and EN, - lots of spell checking stuff in languages other than DE and EN, - 64 bit programs. Some notes to the following: - everything is done as root. - # ... means the prompt. - everything to the right of the prompt are commands to be executed. - Lines without prompt are output. First, mount the original DVD, eg.: # mount /cdrom A partition of about 4 GB free space is needed. Thats "/data" in my case. Create a temporary directory for the new DVD ("/data/tmp/suse92"). The important parts of the DVD go there: # mkdir /data/tmp/suse92 # cd /cdrom # cp -p * /data/tmp/suse92 cp: Verzeichnis ?boot? ausgelassen cp: Verzeichnis ?docu? ausgelassen cp: Verzeichnis ?dosutils? ausgelassen cp: Verzeichnis ?media.1? ausgelassen cp: Verzeichnis ?suse? ausgelassen # cp -a boot /data/tmp/suse92 # cp -a docu /data/tmp/suse92 # cp -a dosutils /data/tmp/suse92 # cp -a media.1 /data/tmp/suse92 # mkdir /data/tmp/suse92/suse # cp -a suse/i586 /data/tmp/suse92/suse # cp -a suse/i686 /data/tmp/suse92/suse # cp -a suse/noarch /data/tmp/suse92/suse # cp -a suse/setup /data/tmp/suse92/suse # cd /data/tmp/suse92/suse # mkdir x86_64 # chmod +w * (the messages mean "skipped directory ?.*?") Now delete the unnecessary stuff: # cd /data/tmp/suse92/suse/i586 # ls aspell-[a-z]*|grep -v -- -de-|grep -v -- -en-|grep -v devel|xargs rm # ls OpenOffice_org-[a-z]*|egrep -v "(gnome)|(kde)|(Quick)|(-de-)|(-en-)"| xargs rm # cd /data/tmp/suse92/suse/noarch # ls ispell-*|grep -v german|xargs rm # ls yast2-trans-*|egrep -v "(-en)|(-de)"|xargs rm # ls susetour-[a-z]*|grep -v de|grep -v en|xargs rm # ls susehelp_[a-z]*|grep -v de|grep -v en|xargs rm # ls suselinux-adminguide*|egrep -v "(_de)|(_en)"|xargs rm # ls suselinux-userguide*|egrep -v "(_de)|(_en)"|xargs rm # ls myspell-*|egrep -v "(german)|(american)|(british)"|xargs rm # ls k*-i18n*|egrep -v -- "-(de)|(en)"|xargs rm After that we are finished with the raw data. What's left is to write all that to a new blank. (My writer is "/dev/hdd"). # cd /data/tmp/suse92 # growisofs -Z /dev/hdd -J -r -l -no-emul-boot \ -b boot/loader/isolinux.bin -c boot/loader/boot.cat\ -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table . This DVD works like a charm for installation on typical PCs. "Have a lot of fun..." Regards, Uli." Note: This translation was done in a hurry and in the wrong direction (I'm german...). All corrections (grammar, style, orthography) are gladly appreciated. Also note that I don't comment on the contents of the text. You may especially want to (de-)select different languages. HTH, Kolja
