As far as I know, Gnome isn't a window manager at all. Even if you
install every single packages on the CD's, this will never show up in the
login menu of kdm or whatever.
Gnome is an environment, not a window manager. Once installed, you can
setup a window manager for this specific environment. Last time I try,
the default WM for Gnome in SuSE 6.2 was Enlightenment. I have now
abandoned, because I consider myself being a happy man with KDE and
WindowMaker and deleted some Gnome packages on my system.
The way to start Gnome is to call the Gnome executable, which is
/opt/gnome/bin/gnome-session. I think it is something like "start
gnome-session".... I can't remember it's been a long time now. This will
lead you to the setup of the entire environment, including the choice of
your default windowmanager, this will change your ~/.Xdefaults and so
on...
