[SLE] Root password recovery or change ?

Hi, Is there any way to change the root password if I forgot it ? I have read in some place (I can't remember where !!) that I could start the Linux box and type at the Lilo Prompt "something" and start (I guess in single user mode) and use the passwd command to change the root password !! Is this true ? and if it is... who can I do it and how can I avoid it ?
