Well, the drives are re-usable if I decide to dump the Drobo in the future. 10TB drives (~$400) are not the cheapest per TB option, but I decided that I would get the largest I could buy in order not to have to replace them all a couple years from now. In theory, the Drobo I have will hold 8 x 10TB, so that should last me for a while in this use case. FYI: I bought a "surveillance" HDD this last time (Seagate Skyhawk). The first was a Seagate Barracuda. The surveillance drive was almost 20% cheaper. http://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/skyhawk/files/skyhawk-ds-... The surveillance drive claims to be pretty robust and that is what I care about more than performance for this situation. I can't help but wonder if they aren't the same drive with different labels and warranties attached.
