Thanks, but /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net just have the SuSE welcome message. What I meant was changing the login prompt from "<hostname> login: " to just "login: " (or to whatever else you might want). I checked in one of my mail archives and found out what needs to be done. It involves editing some source files, then building the rpms and installing them.
From the shadow package you need to modify login.c, and from the sysvinit package you need to modify mingetty.c.
I won't get into details now, but if anyone is interested I can send the info from the old emails I found.
