Hi everyone, I recently installed 12.1 on a USB key to try it out. Previously, I had 11.4 running, but my HDD was killed, and so corruption totalled that installation and I've been making do with a recent Ubuntu for a while. Installation from CD to the USB key went flawlessly. First boot brought up the GDM login screen, at which time I logged in. Everything seemed fine except at the point where I opened an application. First, I tried gnome-terminal, which started up with an all-black window. That is, no title-bar text showing, no window decorations, and no prompt or cursor -- just all black. I tried FireFox next with identical results. System Settings also opens to a black window. The odd thing is that the desktop, top menubar, side-window icons, miniaturized windows (all black contents), and root-window background are all rendered properly. So, it is only application windows that are affected, as far as I can tell at this stage.
From my Ubunti XOrg.log.0, the chipset is as follows:
(--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP)" (ChipID =3D 0x4c57) (II) RADEON(0): AGP card detected The system booted with a Radeon FB console, which works properly. As I can't get at any system settings from the desktop, it is impossible for me to say if there are any tweaks that would alleviate the problem, and before I go and try to make a custom XOrg config file, I thought I'd run this bug by the list to see if anyone has any ideas. Attached are OpenSuse 12.1 XOrg logfile and kernel log files, in case there is any immediately useful information there that would shed light on the problem. Regards, Steve
