Huh, this is what the /usr/local and the /opt hierarchies (system wide) are for. Of course one can also compile and install software in one's home hierarchy.
Even if you usr /usr/local, YaST will install its own version, not knowing about your compilation. Then, depending on your path and library search ordering, it will load one version or the other. Using checkinstall to create an rpm, and then installing that one, keeps YaST/zypper/rpm off my feet. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
