I don't know what is "fill in the blank". Do you mean the search bar in the new style application window? It is useful if you know the name of the program you are searching for, else...
Yes, I could use Alt-F2, but I have my windows-compatible keyboard set up so the key beside the space bar with the MS-Windows logo brings up the menu. Yes I could have it as an alias to Alt-F2 as well. And yes I have the other one bring up a context menu.
I don't understand this, but it maybe off topic, I guess. The faster way to start application from the start menu is click the kickoff icon, move the pointer in one direction only, let's say upward, onto an icon and click on that icon. Every other method, when you have to move the mouse vertically and horizontally several time and click more than once is more tedious and slower. Therefore having favorite applications in the main menu is the most effective. KDE3 offered this as most frequently used application above the menu items. KDE4 does not have this options. I have filed feature request at kdebugs.org 3 monts ago, guess what? It even hasn't been looked at a KDE4 developer.
