Your friend is correct. That cable may work for 10mbps, short distance, but not for 100mbps or longer distance. Pin3 and pin6 should be a twisted pair, and above they aren't.
Pins 4 and 5 are sometimes used for voice (phone) applications, so you could skip them for ethernet (and 7,8). Only pins 1-2, 3-6 are needed.
