I'm curious as to why some people have problems with IPv6 turned on. Because some ISPs have their equipment incorrectly configured. If they only provide IPv4, why is that an issue? I did say misconfigured! I don't remember exactly, but it's something

It turned out that the OP's problem was caused by a missing IPv4 loopback address in his /etc/hosts file.
And curiously it's been missing for several months. I checked through my backups, and the full version of /etc/hosts appeared to change sometime in October 2012. Weird. The only manual changes I ever make to that file is *add* entries for new devices that appear on the LAN, I never change or delete the default entries.
