We have just bought a machine with a winmodem which SuSE does not recognise. Would it be OK to get a 'real' external modem too to use under Linux, or would I first have to remove the winmodem (thereby invalidating my guarantee).
No need to remove the winmodem, since Linux won't even know it exists. You just have to plug the external modem in and everything should be fine, just select the appropriate port in YaST.
