The overlap between the hardware you have and Dell hardware I use with 13.1, plus the modem and wireless you've added, suggests a possibility that too little RAM could possibly be your problem. Exactly when during 13.1 did the failure occur, and how did it manifest?
If that was the case why is only GNOME affected and the other window managers work fine.
IMO Gnome3 has higher dependency on recent enough hardware and abundant RAM. I rarely install it on any of my own installations, where out of habit I disable bling globally via xorg.con*: Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Disable" EndSection Last times I tried Gnome with this setting it has refused to even try to start. KDE and other DEs have no problem having resource gobbling bling disabled.
Does 13.1 default to Gnome 3??
It defaults to nothing. The main DE page used to provide three options from which one selection is always required: Gnome3, KDE4 & Other. I think a 4th (LXDE) may have been added. Once you get to other you may still find it necessary to do as I do and select minimal X, then go to detail selection to add what bits you really want, and taboo things you want not.
Can I upgrade to Gnome 2??
Probably not, but there are Gnome2-based others to choose from if LXDE, XFCE, KDE3 and KDE4 aren't your cup of tea, if not in openSUSE, in various other distros. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
