Ain't lpd some kind of a printing manager? I don't know if lpd was loaded before the update. But will I still be able to print if I set START_LPD to 'no' ?
I think it is a fair assumption if you have it set to yes now it probably was installed and got messed up because of a failed update to it. I would suggest seeing if there is an update for whichever lp package you were using and try installing the update manually.
If lpd is not a part of the standard install then I don't have it installed :)

But doesn't the online update only mark updates recommended if you have the prog installed?
